MAINSTAGE 2022/2023

GREASE

Music, Book and Lyrics by Warren Casey & Jim Jacobs
Directed by Piper J. Distel & Lori Robinson Distel

* Licensed with permission through Concord Theatricals Inc.

Here is Rydell High's senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding "Burger Palace Boys" and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking "Pink Ladies" in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head "greaser" Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their "Summer Nights" as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as "Greased Lightnin'," "It's Raining on Prom Night," "Alone at the Drive-In Movie" recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation.
With a production design reminiscent of Archie Andrews and Josie and the Pussycats comic books, as well as a multi-talented cast of local young adult performers, GREASE is the word in Cambridge this fall!

Raise your skirt and bob your hair with this unique retelling of Charles Dickens' beloved holiday classic from Distel & Distel (A Nightingale Sang, Curiouser).
Set in Depression-era Canada, this favourite with a twist follows the curmudgeonly Ebenezer Scrooge- a miserly businesswoman with a hatred for the holidays, and a troubled past that comes back to haunt her. Visited by three spirits, Scrooge is forced to confront her past and face
her future, while looking at her life link-by-link.
Complete with beloved characters and a score of toe-tapping new songs, MISS SCROOGE is a feminist re-telling of an old tale, sure to chase away the holiday humbugs!
MISS SCROOGE is presented in partnership with Sabatino Vacca and members of The Cambridge Symphony Orchestra.

Jerusha Abbott is the “Oldest Orphan in the John Grier Home” until a mysterious benefactor decides to send her to college to be educated as a writer. Required to write him a letter once a month, she is never to know the benefactor’s identity – so she invents one for him: Daddy Long Legs. Although she knows that he will never respond to her letters, she grows more and more fond of this elusive and kindly “old” gentleman. But another relationship soon begins to develop in Jerusha’s life. Jervis Pendleton is the well-do-do, “youngish” uncle of one of Jerusha’s roommates, who introduces her to a world of literature, travel and adventure. Through her correspondence with Daddy Long Legs and her growing intimacy with Jervis, Jerusha’s letters chronicle her emergence as a delightfully independent “New American Woman.” Yet, there is one startling fact that Jerusha has yet to uncover – a fact that will change her life forever.

When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.
