ARTS FOR ALL

Penny & Pound Theatre Productions is thrilled to announce  EMPOWER PLAY- a theatre arts program tailored for people with developmental disaAbilities. Embark on a creative adventure brimming with excitement and knowledge. Through programming designed to focus on social skills and confidence building, students will immerse themselves in acting, storytelling, and self-expression within a nurturing and diverse setting. Guided by experienced theatre veterans and bi-monthly guests, students are encouraged to take risks and grow in both their art and their confidence! Let’s break down barriers and dazzle on the stage together!

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS OPEN UNTIL
September 1st, 2025

PARTICIPANTS WILL…

  • Learn the fundamentals of theatre and performance including theatre terminology, character creation, vocal techniques (spoken and musical), movement, staging and improvisation

  • Learn and practice social and life skills 

  • Work together to create a one-act performance 

  • Experience performance in front of a live audience

  • Learn and receive mentorship from experienced industry professionals

  • Earn high school volunteer hours 

  • Grow in confidence and skill in a safe and encouraging environment dedicated to their comfort and well-being 

  • Create lifelong friendships 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

EMPOWER PLAY is open to Youth (Ages 12-18) and Adults (18+) who identify as having a developmental or physical disAbility. 

Penny & Pound Theatre Productions is a safe and inclusive youth and young adult production company with a mission to offer the best in community arts and youth theatre education in the Region. We encourage full participation from performers identifying as members of the BIPOC community and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, as well as performers with disAbilities and those of all gender identities, social and economic backgrounds and beliefs. We are looking for enthusiastic performers with a keen knack for singing, acting, dancing or all three! No previous experience is necessary. All we ask is that all students enjoy creative challenges, are hardworking and have a love of the theatrical arts!

WHAT SUPPORT DO PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE?
Empower Play offers various levels of support depending on the needs of each participant, including one-on-one assistance, group facilitators, and trained staff who understand developmental disabilities and are skilled in supporting participants.


ARE THERE ACCOMMODATIONS FOR PHYSICAL, SENSORY AND EMOTIONAL NEEDS?
Yes, the program provides accommodations such as quiet spaces, sensory-friendly activities, and communication support (e.g., picture exchange) to ensure an inclusive environment for all participants.

WHAT SAFETY MEASURES ARE PUT IN PLACE?
The program maintains a safe and supportive environment with trained staff and appropriate supervision. Activities are designed to be safe, with clear guidelines and safety protocols in place for all participants.

CAN YOU PROVIDE ASSISTED TOILETING?
At this time, we cannot provide assisted toileting.

CAN CAREGIVERS JOIN?
Yes! We welcome caregivers to join in on the fun as often or as little as they would like, at no extra cost!

WILL PARTICIPANTS PERFORM IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE?
Empower Play offers the opportunity for participants to showcase their work through informal performances for family and friends. However, participation in the performances is optional and based on individual comfort levels.

WHAT SKILLS WILL PARTICIPANTS DEVELOP?
Participants will develop social and communication skills, creativity, emotional expression, teamwork, problem-solving, and confidence. They will also have the chance to improve focus, memory, and coordination through theatre activities.

IS PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN DRAMA OR THEATRE NECESSARY?
No prior experience is necessary. The program is designed to meet participants where they are and help them grow at their own pace, whether they are new to drama or have experience.
